Shadow - Image - Truth

“ …the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things” (Heb. 10:1)

The whole of human history is a journey towards the Reign (Kingdom) of God, the “good things to come”. The Old Testament is the “shadow of heavenly things” (Heb 8,5), the New Testament and Church of Christ are the “very image of the things” and the truth is the Reign of God. The events of the Old and New Testaments are prefigurings of the Reign of God “For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood.” (1 Cor. 13:12). The events and prophecies of the Old Testament were shadows and enigmas that couldn’t be fully understood at the time. Only the coming of Christ could give meaning to them and interpret them. The time between the the descent of the Holy Spirit and the Second Coming is the time of the Church, the time of the activity of the Holy Spirit in the world. Everything that happens during this period, good or bad, is leading the world towards the Reign of God. Christ promised to send the Holy Spirit saying, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” This truth can be interpreted in two ways, either meaning the truth regarding the salvation of man, or in terms of the truth of the Reign of God, the true state to which the Holy Spirit leads the Church, which St Maximos the Confessor calls “the state of future things”. Then there will be no need of either “shadows” or “images”, there will be no “covering”, no obstacle in the way of full communion between God and man.

What is the point of working on a Phd thesis when after writing 300 or so pages it ends up gathering dust in the university library? I've been thinking that there must be some way of putting all the reading and research I'm doing to good use. So with the blessing of my spiritual father, I decided to start this blog, as a means of sharing some of the things that I'm learning along the way, whether it has to do with Iconography, Liturgical Theology or other matters theological or spiritual. God willing I will make progress beyond this first post!
